- Here are the results using Pointless 1.01 (still waiting for 2.0,
- argh!) and the Benjamin Caps font. I configured Pointless to render only
- the capital Q which has an extremely long swash.
-
- First test - Typed a 100-point 'Q' and measured it. 145 pixels from top to
- bottom. Assuming a linear relationship, a 177-point font should be 257
- pixels tall. I tried a 180-point 'Q' just to be sure. The bitmap measured
- 260 pixels, but the bottom 30 pixels had horizontal streaks running through
- it. It looks like a problem with Pointless, so to make sure:
-
- Second test - Saved a bitmap Benjamin Caps 100 font to disk (again with
- only the 'Q' defined). Rebooted without Pointless. Typed in a 100-point
- 'Q' in Platinum Paint. No corruption in the bitmap. Doubled the point
- size and typed another 'Q'. No horizontal streaks in this gigantic 'Q',
- which suggests that Pointless was responsible for messing up the 180-point
- font in the first place. The 200-point 'Q' measured 286 pixels tall. The
- Font Manager and QD II don't seem to have any problem with it.
-
- Conclusion - Well, why not? If the system software can handle a 286-pixel
- font, I don't see why it can't technically handle a 2000-pixel font (the
- inescapable out-of-memory problem notwithstanding). I really like the idea
- of getting fonts larger than 255 points *without* having to modify the
- system software. Does Westcode or Alan Bird have an Internet address? :)
