- I hope the person that posted the original message will not
- be offended by this message but...
-
- I don't understand how anyone can expect to use much less program
- a computer without owning a set of manuals. The manuals from
- the manufacturer are always considered to be the primary source
- for information and other manuals from secondary sources should
- be considered just that, SECONDARY. If the manufacture's manuals
- leave things out or are possibly confusing then you should refer
- the the 2ndary manual in an attempt to clarify the subject but
- in all cases the manufacture's manual is to be considered
- the authority (this of course does not mean that there are not
- mistakes or ommisions, intentional or otherwise).
-
- My job, as I see it, is often to help my felow employees
- understand IBM mainframe manuals and how our big computer
- operating system works. I would not think of trying without
- consulting the correct manual that is applicable to the
- subject at hand.
-
- My favorite analogy is that even if you are the richest person
- in the world, you cannot drop several millions down and buy
- yourself a Lear Jet airplane, then jump in and take off without
- learning a great deal about the plane and the process of flying.
-
- To program your Amiga effectivly you must understand programming
- and then understand at least some of the operating system.
- The less you understand about either, the poorer will be your
- end result. If you have a good understanding of both and understand
- the task you are trying to solve, then your result will be
- "wonderful".
-
- Now of course if you are truely rich, you can hire someone to
- learn for you, in which case, all bets are off.
-
- I'm reminded of the tale of a royal prince from (fill in your favorite country)
- that had a royal whipping boy to take the prince's punishment when he
- did poorly in his lessons.
-
-
- My parting shot, buy the books, buy the autodocs, buy as many 2nd party
- books as you can find, consider them the entry fee to the
- programming task. Stop whining. If the books are not available to you
- then strugle mightly to make them available. That $2000 A3000 machine (Lear Jet)
- deserves better.
-
- Whew, I feel better already :-)
