  12. Thanks to everyone who pointed me at BTNtape and the GNU tar port, but I
  13. still don't quite have it working.  I'm not sure whether I don't have
  14. the mountlist entry set up right, or if there's a 2.1 incompatability
  15. somewhere.

  17. Configuration:
  18.     Amiga 2000 (no acceleration, `Normal' chipset)
  19.     2.1 OS/ROMS
  20.     GVP HC+ with 8M SIMMS, no on-board disk
  21.     Quantum ProDrive 105S in the bay (SCSI target 2)
  22.     Archive Viper 150M cartridge tape in the bay (SCSI target 1)

  24. This works fine for backup/restore via QuarterBack, the problem is strictly
  25. with attempting to transfer data between the Ami and a SPARCstation (unix).
  26. I picked up BTNtape and GNU tar from wuarchive.  After reading the BTNtape
  27. docs, I created the following mountlist entry:

  29.     TAPE:    Handler        = L:btn-handler
  30.         Startup        = "gvpscsi.device/UN-1/BS-512/NB-128/BT-4"
  31.         StackSize    = 4000
  32.         Priority    = 5
  33.         GlobVec        = -1
  34.         Mount        = 1

  36. It seemed to mount OK, so I tried gnutar.  It complained about not having
  37. arp.library.  So I downloaded the 1.3 ARP distribution and installed the
  38. library.  It works fine when extracting from a tarfile on the harddisk.
  39. (Copied over via PC-DOS floppy.)  But when extracting from tape the tape
  40. moves back and forth for a few seconds then I get a `Please insert volume
  41. local in any drive' requester.  After about four cancels the tar proceeds,
  42. or the system crashes (which seems to be random.)  When attempting to
  43. extract from a tarfile on a PC-DOS disk, the requestor was always followed
  44. by a crash.
