- Uh, if I may interject here... ?
-
- Many times I've found that the manuals written by *programmers* are difficult
- for the non-programmers/casual users to decipher. They assume that their
- audience has the computerese background to read between the lines and
- understand the "missing" information. (Not that anything is missing here,
- I wouldn't know, I haven't yet bothered with the program. Nor do I know the
- computer expertise of the poster). So, from my experience (as one who
- *always* RTFM, though rarely understands it without a question or two)
- I find that comment to be quite rude because it makes an assumption that
- you don't know to be true. If you wish to help someone, there is no reason
- to insult them while doing so.
-
- A more polite way of stating it would be: "Have you read the manual?" This
- makes no assumptions whatsoever and gently reminds the poster of something
- that may have slipped their mind. You can then follow up with "If not,
- here's how it's done:"
-
- Re-read your post as though it were directed at yourself. How would YOU
- feel if someone told you, publicly, to RTFM? Hmmm...??
-
- I've seen that phrase too many times and it really gets my hackles up. (As
- well as those posts where someone says "I assume you asked that because
- you want to do XXX" without first clarifying just WHAT the poster is asking
- about. An irrelevent answer to the poster's questions merely wastes
- bandwidth)
-
- Please do not make assumptions without clarifying a person's position first.
-
- Thank you.

- Carry on...
