  12. I recently purchased a SupraDrive 500XP and wanted to use an
  13. Adaptec ACB 4010 SCSI<-->MFM controller board with an old 10MB
  14. MFM hard disk I have.

  16. The SupraDrive is equipped with the latest ROM (v3.8) and the
  17. software is the Series III release (v3.8).

  19. The Adaptec board is set at SCSI 1 and has extended commands
  20. enabled.

  22. SupraForm recognizes that the device is out there and includes
  23. options for Adaptec ACB 4000 (which should work for the 4010)
  24. and the ability to set custom drive geometries (mine is
  25. 306 cyl. 4 hd., 17 sec/trk, etc.)

  27. It will format the drive just fine (at least it steps the heads
  28. across the disk like it's formatting).

  30. If the MAP option is turned ON, the verify process will get
  31. nothing but errors until it aborts at 100 errors.  If the MAP
  32. option is turned OFF, it simply reports that it's performing
  33. a 'zero' of the disk and instructs me to re-boot.

  35. In either cas the SupraDrive ROM can't find an RDB and
  36. cannot mount that drive on startup.  it tries to mount the
  37. disk every 10 seconds while the machine is on (at least I
  38. assume that's what it's trying to do).

  40. I even triedusing the MessyFormat command in the MSH package
  41. to format it for MS-DOS (just to experiment).  The command
  42.  
  43.      MessyFormat 1 suprascsi.device
  44.  
  45. would access the drive and run thugh all the heads and cylinders
  46. like it was really formatting it or some junk. and it really sound
  47. ed like things were happening.

  49. (I wrote an appropriate MountList entry for an MS-DOS hard disk
  50. using suprascsi.device and MessyFileSystem.  the system reports
  51. 'Not a DOS disk in unit xxx' when an access is attempted.

  53. Alright.  What experiences has anyone here had with using
  54. Adaptec MFM-SCSI boards on their Amigas.  (Anyone use one
  55. with a SupraDrive 500XP?)

  57. Just for grins, I ran the SupraChkRom utility and it reported
  58. "Rom is missing, improperly installed or BAD" when I first
  59. got the thing.

  61. This was strange as my Quantum LP52S whic I have installed inside
  62. the 500XP has worked flawlessly from the word go (Even though
  63. the ROM still reported BAD!)

  65. Since then (about 2 weeks) the ROM now reports GOOD!  Huh?!?!?
  66. The Adaptec board and drive still don't work.

  68. I've called Supra Tech Support and they are clueless.  (See
  69. comp.dcom.modems for more of my troubles :(  ).
