-
- I recently purchased a SupraDrive 500XP and wanted to use an
- Adaptec ACB 4010 SCSI<-->MFM controller board with an old 10MB
- MFM hard disk I have.
-
- The SupraDrive is equipped with the latest ROM (v3.8) and the
- software is the Series III release (v3.8).
-
- The Adaptec board is set at SCSI 1 and has extended commands
- enabled.
-
- SupraForm recognizes that the device is out there and includes
- options for Adaptec ACB 4000 (which should work for the 4010)
- and the ability to set custom drive geometries (mine is
- 306 cyl. 4 hd., 17 sec/trk, etc.)
-
- It will format the drive just fine (at least it steps the heads
- across the disk like it's formatting).
-
- If the MAP option is turned ON, the verify process will get
- nothing but errors until it aborts at 100 errors. If the MAP
- option is turned OFF, it simply reports that it's performing
- a 'zero' of the disk and instructs me to re-boot.
-
- In either cas the SupraDrive ROM can't find an RDB and
- cannot mount that drive on startup. it tries to mount the
- disk every 10 seconds while the machine is on (at least I
- assume that's what it's trying to do).
-
- I even triedusing the MessyFormat command in the MSH package
- to format it for MS-DOS (just to experiment). The command
-
- MessyFormat 1 suprascsi.device
-
- would access the drive and run thugh all the heads and cylinders
- like it was really formatting it or some junk. and it really sound
- ed like things were happening.
-
- (I wrote an appropriate MountList entry for an MS-DOS hard disk
- using suprascsi.device and MessyFileSystem. the system reports
- 'Not a DOS disk in unit xxx' when an access is attempted.
-
- Alright. What experiences has anyone here had with using
- Adaptec MFM-SCSI boards on their Amigas. (Anyone use one
- with a SupraDrive 500XP?)
-
- Just for grins, I ran the SupraChkRom utility and it reported
- "Rom is missing, improperly installed or BAD" when I first
- got the thing.
-
- This was strange as my Quantum LP52S whic I have installed inside
- the 500XP has worked flawlessly from the word go (Even though
- the ROM still reported BAD!)
-
- Since then (about 2 weeks) the ROM now reports GOOD! Huh?!?!?
- The Adaptec board and drive still don't work.
-
- I've called Supra Tech Support and they are clueless. (See
- comp.dcom.modems for more of my troubles :( ).
-
- I would appreciate any and all feedback that anyone can offer.
-
- Thank you very much.
