- All of this talk about using PAL as WCS (Writeable Control
- Store) sounds interesting. Actually, though, the idea of
- using WCS to emulate another processor is "old hat;"
- Burroughs (one of the parents of the current Unisys) did
- that one one better with the old B1800 series: they wrote
- several language-specific instruction sets and then wrote
- microcode interpreters for the respective instruction sets.
- The result was that each language (COBOL, BASIC, FORTRAN,
- PASCAL, etc.) ran using an instruction set that was
- optimized for that specific language.
-
- BTW--a bit of trivia. Does anyone remember the original use
- of the 8-inch floppy (Flexible Disk, I believe, in IBM
- terminology)? If my memory serves me correctly, it was
- first used as the load device for the WCS on IBM Series I
- machines. So much for the history lesson.

- As a VAX user and Amiga-phile, I am excited about the
- possibility of having an Amiga with "Alpha Inside" :-),
- perhaps we will see an Amiga running, on the same screen,
- AmigaDOS, MSDOS (via a BridgeBoard), Apple System 7 (via an
- A-Max board), Amiga Unix, and OpenVMS. Just think, double
- click on the appropriate icon for the OS/virtual machine to
- run whatever application you need at the moment.

- Eat your heart out users of lesser computers!!
