  10. All of this talk about using PAL as WCS (Writeable Control
  11. Store) sounds interesting.  Actually, though, the idea of
  12. using WCS to emulate another processor is "old hat;"
  13. Burroughs (one of the parents of the current Unisys) did
  14. that one one better with the old B1800 series:  they wrote
  15. several language-specific instruction sets and then wrote
  16. microcode interpreters for the respective instruction sets. 
  17. The result was that each language (COBOL, BASIC, FORTRAN,
  18. PASCAL, etc.) ran using an instruction set that was
  19. optimized for that specific language.

  21. BTW--a bit of trivia.  Does anyone remember the original use
  22. of the 8-inch floppy (Flexible Disk, I believe, in IBM
  23. terminology)?  If my memory serves me correctly, it was
  24. first used as the load device for the WCS on IBM Series I
  25. machines.  So much for the history lesson.

  27. As a VAX user and Amiga-phile, I am excited about the
  28. possibility of having an Amiga with "Alpha Inside" :-),
  29. perhaps we will see an Amiga running, on the same screen,
  30. AmigaDOS, MSDOS (via a BridgeBoard), Apple System 7 (via an
  31. A-Max board), Amiga Unix, and OpenVMS.  Just think, double
  32. click on the appropriate icon for the OS/virtual machine to
  33. run whatever application you need at the moment.
