   It is not possible.  The difference between the DJ500C and the DJ550C is
far more than just software.  The DJ500C can only hold one ink cartridge at
once.   When printing black on a color page, the color inks have to be mixed
to get the black.  Not only is this "black" not really black but dark-brown,
this also uses up the color inks very rapidly.  You also have to swap ink
cartrides when going from printing a color document to printing a black-and-
white document.

   The DeskJet 550C can hold both the color and black ink cartridges at once,
like the PaintJet printers, eliminating the need to mix the colored inks to
get black on a color page and the need to swap ink cartridges.  Upgrading a
DJ500C to a DJ550C would thus be next to impossible, as all of the mechanical
hardware and electronics to hold and use the extra ink cartridge would have
to be added.
