- Someone mentioned a while back that their zmodem problems were related to their
- terminal lines being converted to terminal servers. His explanation sounded
- pretty reasonable so I thought this was my problem since we use a Xyplex
- terminal server. The only thing was that I work in the Network Availability
- Center here at A&M and one of our functions is to log any networking problems.
- No one ever called in a problem with using zmodem (I even saw someone using sz
- when doing a what on our Unix machine) so I figured there was still something
- wrong on my side. Then a couple of friends told me they were having trouble
- with sz on the Unix machine too so I thought I'd write up a problem on it to
- see what our Unix people could find out. In the meanwhile, I thought I'd use
- our Vax's sz and magically, it worked. I don't know how 'cause I've tried it
- before.
-
- Anyways, the Unix people got back to me and told me to try changing a setting
- on the terminal server. On the Xyplex, you have to connect to the machine,
- break out to the local prompt, type set session passall, and then resume your
- session. I tried it and it worked. I asked our communications guy why this
- was and he said something about the server ( or machine?) translating what went
- out (he got a little over my head after that ... I may work at the NAC but
- 50% of the networking stuff still baffles me... I just BS my way thru whenever
- a (l)user asks me something I have no idea about :) I then asked him why you
- didn't have to do it with the Vaxes since you use the same terminal server. He
- said something to the effect that the Vaxes didn't do any translations.
-
- Hopefully, this'll help some of you guys who are still having problems with
- zmodem transfers. I can safely say now that I have never had Term crash on me
- (since 1.9) and have yet to run across any serious bugs. As a matter of fact,
- I think the only bug I've ever run across was on the previous release of Term
- where the snapping cursor would leave trails behind.
-
- Things I'd like to see on the next version of Term (off the top of my head):
- resizeable review buffer, the ability for Term to open it's own window, the
- ability to use the cursor keys and return in phonebook, vt2xx support (or is
- the xpr lib out there somewhere?), and for Term to continue what it's doing
- when the menu's are pulled down (during transfers or when text is being printed
- t othe screen.) Oh, and I take speed over program size any day... especially
- since I can just implode the program.
