  20. PROBLEM:    Some customers are making use of high-density tape storage
  21.         and/or remote dumps to a high-density storage device systems 
  22.         for filesystem backups.  In the event of a root drive
  23.         failure, the root partition cannot be restored from these
  24.         formats without first performing a "scratch install" of
  25.         Concentrix.
  26.  
  27. CAUSE:        The versions of Concentrix which are bootable from floppy
  28.         disks support only the "default" tape devices:
  29.  
  30.             rxt00    Multibus 1/2" tape (9 trk)
  31.             rxtv00    VME 1/2" tape (9 trk)
  32.             rst00    SCSI 1/4" cartridge (FX/1)
  33.             rscst00 SCSI 1/4" cartridge (FX/4, FX/40)
  34.  
  35. SOLUTION:    Maintain a reasonably current backup of your root partition
  36.         on this "default" media (typically the same media that
  37.         Concentrix is shipped to you on).  This takes only a few
  38.         minutes and can save hours if the root drive needs replacement.
  39.  
  40.         For this purpose, "reasonably current" means that your
  41.         backup was made:
  42.  
  43.             o  With your current OS revision
  44.             o  Since any major configuration changes
  45.             o  Since any hardware changes
  46.             o  Since the last build of Customunix (if applicable)
  47.  
  48.         The restrictions are simple:
  49.  
  50.             o  Tape must be "dump" format (not "tar" or others)
  51.             o  Must be level 0 dump of the root filesystem
  52.             o  Root must be on the standard root device
  53.                (typically xd00r or xdv00r)
  54.             o  Dump must be on "supported" media as shown
  55.                above
  56.  
  57.         These criteria should be sufficient to ensure that your
  58.         root partition can be restored from a cold boot.  You may
  59.         wish to have more frequent backups, on any media type, to
  60.         maintain recent copies of files like /etc/passwd.
  61.  
  62.         To restore a root backup made in accordance with these
  63.         guidelines, follow the installation instructions for
  64.         a "new install", substituting your level 0 root-filesystem
  65.         dump for the "Concentrix root binary tape".
