  20. The 4th SCM workshop will be held in May in association with
  21. the 15th International Conference on Software Engineering.
  22. There will be a session of longer papers on SCM toward the
  23. end ICSE 15 (May 17-21, 1993), which will then be followed
  24. by the SCM workshop.  Previous SCM workshops were held in
  25. Grassau (Germany), Princeton (USA), and Trondheim (Norway).

  27. Software configuration management (SCM) supports the
  28. management and evolution of large software by assisting the
  29. change process (possibly carried out by multiple teams) and
  30. by controlling products ranging from code to documentation.
  31. Among other tasks, SCM involves management of versions,
  32. assembly of compatible configurations, team coordination,
  33. and organizing, building and releasing software.
  34. Configuration management is a fundamental mechanism for
  35. supporting most automated software processes, is central to
  36. all software environments, and requires significant system
  37. support.  There are now major commercial SCM systems in
  38. addition to the important ones from research groups.
  39. Furthermore, configuration management is having an effect on
  40. and is taking advantage of progress in databases, object
  41. stores, operating systems, and human interfaces.

  43. The goal of this workshop is to bring together SCM experts
  44. and practitioners to discuss topics including:
  45.  - novel and innovative approaches to SCM
  46.  - complete SCM solutions
  47.  - evaluations of and experiences with SCM systems
  48.  - problems and progress in software databases
  49.  - distributed computing, scalabliity, and usability issues
  50.  - problems in applying SCM in industrial settings
  51.  - SCM models and process modeling
  52.  - SCM implementation issues (distributed, database,
  53.    object-oriented, user interface technologies)
  54.  
  55. The workshop will be an interactive forum with presentations
  56. of refereed papers, panel sessions, and discussion groups.
  57. Papers should emphasize what is new or unusual about the
  58. chosen approach, describe major results, their importance,
  59. and their relationship to other work in the field. Papers
  60. reporting on experiences with large scale application of SCM
  61. tools will be especially welcome.

  63. Attendance at the workshop will be limited.  Prospective
  64. participants may submit full papers, position papers (2-3
  65. pages), or proposals for panels and discussion sessions.
  66. Participants will be selected on the basis of their
  67. submissions.  Participants may also submit longer papers for
  68. possible inclusion and presentation at the ICSE
  69. configuration management session.  Full papers must be
  70. original contributions, not accepted or submitted elsewhere.
