- In the old days Apple created a network system for Macs and they called
- it AppleTalk. This covered the protocols suite and the hardware it
- ran on.
-
- As time went by, AppleTalk (the protocol suite) added other transport
- media like Ethernet and Token Ring. To clarify matters Apple renamed
- the hardware LocalTalk and kept the name AppleTalk for the protocols.
-
- So today you have AppleTalk the protocol suite running on top of a
- variety of hardware media:
-
- LocalTalk - the standard plug built into every Mac ever made.
- EtherTalk - ethernet
- TokenTalk - token ring
-
- So the PC people are talking about adding "an AppleTalk port" are
- talking about adding a LocalTalk port.
