- That's EMULEX, not EMULUX.
-
- Many SCSI disk drives can be used as-is with DEC equipment that
- supports them. Manufacturers are: Seagate Technology, Micropolis, Maxtor
- Corp, Quantum, System Industries, Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu, etc. The only
- way to learn if a particular make and model will work is to try it or to
- ask someone who has tried it.
-
- Direct replacments for other DEC drives such as the RA and RF
- series are not available (DEC has patented key portions of the technology
- and, as far as I know, has not licensed it). You would have to buy a third
- party controller as well as the disk drives. There are third party SCSI,
- ESDI, and SMD controllers available from Andromeda Systems Inc, Aviv Corp.,
- Cypress Technologies, Dilog, Emulex, Webster Computer Corp., etc. Many of
- these have been known to break with new releases of VMS; the emulation of
- DEC's controller is less than perfect.
-
- Some emulations have been so far from perfect as to cause
- corruption of the disk due to the correct and proper use of legal and
- documented I/O functions. In particular, the Emulex QD32 and QD33
- controllers failed to properly execute the IO$M_DATACHECK function causing
- corruption of data.
-
- Third party peripherals can save you money. They can provide
- functionality that is simply not available from DEC. They also carry a
- rather large risk.
-
- DEC Field Service will take some third party equipment on a
- maintenance contract. Don't expect them to stock parts locally however
- (unless you put a large number of the same make and model on contract).
