- My impression is that 1. is MUCH more expensive than 2 or 3. Neither 2 or 3
- REQUIRE a dedicated server, but I recommend it be configured that way for
- stability of the system (users, even administrators can do things,
- unintentionally that bring the server down). Both 2 and 3 offer a distinct
- advantage over 1 in that as OS/2 based systems, YOU can develop applications
- to run ON the server (not really possible for 1). Things like database
- reindexing, custom reports, virus scanning, file copying, etc. The design of
- 2 and 3 allows these programs to run on the server at will, rather than binding
- them in at boot time like 1.
-
- Lan Server has trailed Lan Manager in features for much of its life, however,
- with version 3, it appears to have caught up. They are similar, but not the
- same. Their API structures have small diffrences, so small in impact that
- all of the Lan Manager programs that I have written to date, work in a Lan
- Server environment without re-compiling or re-linking. IBM claims that Lan
- Server now has a performance lead. They have benchmarks to back this up, so
- ask your IBM rep for a copy of this report. (Since Lan Server 3.0 runs on
- OS/2 2.0, part of the performance gain is the 32-bit code base, vs Lan
- Manager's OS/2 1.3 16-bit code base.)
-
- I use Lan Manager, and have evaluated Lan Server. For the moment, I am making
- no changes (LM 2.0c) due to cost controls that prohibit upgrading H/W and S/W.
