  10. A couple of months ago someone posted in this group that IBM's "rsh" of
  11. TCP/IP would not work properly.

  13. At our site we are trying to backup the OS/2-machines using GTAK's tar,
  14. which even backups extended attributes. As the present implementation of
  15. this GNU tar does not allow utilizing a remote tape via IBM's TCP/IP (A.
  16. Kaiser told me today in a note, that the implementation is 4 to 6 months
  17. away, at least), I tried to follow K.U. Rommel's advice to pipe the
  18. OS/2-tar-output via "rsh" to the tape in question, which resides on a Unix-
  19. machine. He mentioned problems in respect to IBM's "rsh".

  21. Guess what, "rsh" still does not work (have TCP/IP 1.2.1, CSD UN29511). We
  22. get the SYS1805 ("The process tried to write to a nonexistent pipe.") error
  23. (US version of OS/2 plus golden SP).

  25. What is the story with this issue? The developers should be aware of this
  26. problem for months now and in the latest CSD for the base-kit the problem
  27. still is not fixed ?? This is upsetting !

  29. Being on the issue of bugs. The present NFSD-implementation (CSD 1822) is still
  30. useless. In order to get our OS/2 machines backed up to the Unix-streamers we
  31. tried to attach all OS/2-drives via NFS, which works o.k. but still is not
  32. fast. But restoring from the Unix-streamers to the attached OS/2 drives is
  33. aggravating, timeouts, slow-motion writes etc. It is simply useless!

  35. So what do IBMers suggest ? We desperately need a possibility to backup our
  36. OS/2 machines onto Unix-streamer tapes ! Now. Including extended attributes.

  38. What about FTP, Inc.? We used to use the DOS-implementation, which had a tar
  39. supplied, back in the DOS-days. Does their TCP/IP-implementation for OS/2
  40. allow for backing up and restoring OS/2-machines on Unix-streamer tapes ?
  41. If so, what about extended attributes?

  43. If so, we contemplate switching to that product.
