- I'm afraid I ignored all the "swap file full" postings, since I am
- running with 16MB of RAM and only four or five programs going at a time,
- which led to me think that I was unlikely to be swapping at all. I was
- rudely awakened yesterday when my swap file suddenly announced that it
- had grown to 20MB, gobbling up all remaining space in my C partition and
- bringing various programs to a screeching halt. I closed all
- applications, reset the swap location to a larger drive, deleted the old
- swap file, and rebooted, so the crisis has been solved, but two
- questions still linger:
-
- 1. How could a simple configuration like mine, with more memory than
- could possibly be needed for the applications I am running, ever
- generate a 20MB swap file? That is, where did all this swapped-out data
- come from?
-
- 2. How can I prevent the swap file from growing beyond a certain size in
- the future? My D drive has plenty of free space for now, but is there a
- setting I can enter that will tell the swap file to start dumping
- unneeded information after it grows to a certain maximum size? In other
- words, is there a user setting to force garbage collection?
-
- The relevant line in my config.sys file reads:
-
- swappath=d:\os2\system 2048 2048
-
- It originally was on the C partition, but I switched it to D and created
- the relevant subdirectories. The swap file is set up at about 2MB and
- has not grown since I reset it.
-
- Thanks for any suggestions,
-
- David
