- Folks, please get this straight. It is not IBM's policy to lay people off.
- The large number of people that left last year did so under a voluntary
- retirement program. They may attempt to do the same thing this year,
- although in a worst case situation, it is suspected that IBM might have to
- resort to layoffs.

- As for the mainframe business, there is still hope. IBM is now focusing
- its marketing efforts by touting mainframes as 'one hell of a server.'
- Recent reports in DP magazines tend to give credence to this. Furthermore,
- if IBM can put its mainframe technology into smaller boxes, who's not to
- say that an AS/400 sized mainframe would be impossible. This would be a
- plausible solution for companies doing a lot of transaction processing on
- Big Blue Big Iron. The mainframe business may never be the same for IBM,
- but a shift in marketing strategies and technology could at least make it a
- profitable division of a more diversified IBM.
