- I'm building a custom serial card (it must do 45.5 baud) for a TDD
- (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf) project, and need to know which
- UART chips COM.SYS will talk directly to, so that I don't have to write
- a special driver for the thing.
-
- If you have an older serial card (one that actually has single UART
- chips on it, as opposed to new-fangled custom combo chips), and you
- have the lid off your machine, please feel free to post me the
- manufacturer and chip number.
-
- Please forgive my lousy memory for part numbers, I'm at work, but my
- databooks are at home (when will I learn to take notes?)
-
- a) From unrelated discussions in this group I gather a 6551 and 6551B
- will work, is that correct? Is this the same as the Rockwell chip
- I find in my circa '79 databook? If not Rockwell, who makes it?
-
- b) I've heard of the National Semiconductor 8205 (something like that).
- Is this Ok?
-
- c) Motorola 6850 (MC146850?) Ok?
-
- d) Our local parts store (Active electronics) stocks a COM1867 (something
- like that) from SCB or some such. We couldn't even find a manufacturer
- name, let alone spec sheets on it, so I guess it really doesn't matter
- if this one works (unless you can supply me sheets too).
-
- Also, this is not as important to me, but the same info for the MS-DOS
- COM drivers would be nice too. If I have to make more of these for
- anyone else, it would be nice if the same hardware would work.
-
- I'm in the assembly process, almost ready for the UART section, so please
- contact me ASAP, followup here or e-mail is fine.
-
- Thanks!
