- About a month ago, I posted a problem with having my Adaptec 1542B
- SCSI controller exist peacefully with two RLL hard drives that are
- already in my system. Here's what I've been able to find out and a
- few more questions to the masses (and IBM).
-
- Here's how I have the drives setup:
- (at least this is how they show up under DOS 5.0)
-
- Drive 1 (RLL) Drive 2 (RLL) Drive 3 (SCSI)
-
- +---------------+ +---------------+ +----------------+
- |60 Meg Primary | |60 Meg Logical | |318 Meg |
- |Drive C: | |Drive G: | |Drive K: |
- +---------------+ +---------------+ +----------------+
- |60 Meg Logical | |60 Meg Logical |
- |Drive D: | |Drive H: |
- +---------------+ +---------------+
- |60 Meg Logical | |60 Meg Logical |
- |Drive E: | |Drive I: |
- +---------------| +---------------+
- |13 Meg Logical | |14 Meg Logical |
- |Drive F: | |Drive J: |
- +---------------+ +---------------+
- |OS/2 Boot |
- |Manager 1 Meg |
- +---------------+
-
- The SCSI Drive shows up at the END of the Drive List as K:
-
- I have OS/2 loaded on Drive D: and boot it via Boot Manager. However,
- through some extensive testing (thanks mostly to booting OS/2 from a
- floppy with the aha154x.add driver)...The SCSI disk shows up as the D:
- Drive! This causes the boot procedure to die since my OS/2 files are
- now located on the E: drive, and it's expecting them on the Current D:
- drive (my SCSI disk)!
-
- Here's what the drives look like after booted from an OS/2 Floppy:
-
-
- Drive 1 (RLL) Drive 2 (RLL) Drive 3 (SCSI)
-
- +---------------+ +---------------+ +----------------+
- |60 Meg Primary | |60 Meg Logical | |318 Meg |
- |Drive C: | |Drive H: | |Drive D: |
- +---------------+ +---------------+ +----------------+
- |60 Meg Logical | |60 Meg Logical |
- |Drive E: | |Drive I: |
- +---------------+ +---------------+
- |60 Meg Logical | |60 Meg Logical |
- |Drive F: | |Drive J: |
- +---------------| +---------------|
- |13 Meg Logical | |14 Meg Logical |
- |Drive G: | |Drive K: |
- +---------------+ +---------------+
- |OS/2 Boot |
- |Manager 1 Meg |
- +---------------+
-
- More testing has shown that if I partition out the second RLL drive
- with one PRIMARY drive..It will become the D: drive and the SCSI disk
- will be bumped up to E: and the logical drives will follow behind
- them!
-
- This really causes some havoc for software under DOS seeing the drives
- in one order...and OS/2 putting them in another. Is this to be
-
- expected? I would hope that the SCSI disks would be placed AFTER all
- the RLL drives are noticed.
-
- My only solution is to put ONE and ONLY one partition on each disk.
- This will give me nowhere to work with HPFS disks and really causes
- some headaches if I install Windows software on one drive under DOS
- and call it up from another under OS/2. What will happen if I put
- additional drives and/or a CD-ROM drive on the SCSI Bus?
-
- (If the WinOS/2 3.1 release ever hits, I could go 100% OS/2, know what
- I mean, nudge, nudge?)
