- And here's the semi-technical explanation.

- COM1 uses IRQ 4 and COM2 uses IRQ 3. With the IBM compatible design
- (using Intel and compatible hardware), interrupts with lower numbers
- are serviced first. Hence, the system gives the nod to IRQ 3 (COM2)
- if it has to choose between two "simultaneous" interrupts generated on
- both lines.

- Note that non-AT bus architectures alleviate this problem quite a bit.
- The AT bus has served us well, but it is getting a little long in the
- tooth.
