- Help!!!
-
- I was on my way out the door, and before I left I thought I would
- check my e-mail. I am/was using NCSA Telnet, and up until then
- everything had been going beautifully. Anyway, I went to log on, and
- I got an error window, stating that there wasn't enough memory to
- start the program, did I want to change the dos settings. I answered
- no, and figured I would just shut down and try again on Monday.
-
- Well, I started to shutdown, and left the room (had to take care of
- urgent business). When I came back, there was no disk activity, and
- the screen still said to wait. I waited about 5 more minutes, and
- nothing changed so I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, and when it restarted, I got
- the following error report.

- The system detected an internal processing
- error at location ##0160:fff6459e - 000d:959e.
- 60000, 9084
-
- 038600d1
- Internal revision 6.466, 92/10/15
-
- The system is stopped. Record the location number
- of the error and contact your service representative.
-
- First two questions, then I'll tell you what I did.
-
- 1. Is this a hardware or software error?
- 2. I bought OS/2 directly from IBM over an 800 number, I have no idea
- who my service representative is, how do I find out for future use
-
- Well I did the 2 disk then escape minimal boot, and after inserting
- disk 2, chkdsk said C: did not exist. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del ( Old DOS
- habits die hard 8-)), and did it again. This time chkdsk found C: and
- started to work, but after fixing two bad allocation errors, seemed to
- die. Atleast I didn't get the [A:] prompt back again, so I poped the
- disk out and hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, just to see what would happen.
-
- It booted, chkdsk did some truncation of corrupted EA's and a few
- other things, and the WPS came up, but the Minimized window viewer was
- a folder. Anything I tried, ended up just resulting in a blank screen
- and a locked up computer. So I decided to reinstall the system from
- scratch.
-
- Installation started up, and for some reason I decide to not accept
- the C: partition, and chose option 2. After seeing that the disk was
- still partitioned the way I had it set up, I did nothing in fdisk, and
- hit F3, until it exited (C: was still marked as startable, instead of
- installable), and this time I chose to accept the C: partition.
-
- Well It formatted C: and the install was going along fine. I figured
- I'd breeze thru it like I did the first two times (After the initial
- install, I decide to get rid of the bootmanager and my DOS 5.0
- partition, didn't have any errors) and reinstall the Service Pack on
- Monday, and set everything back up. Well after inserting Disk 5, I
- got an error message, and that I should do the installition and disk
- 1, followed by escape thing and look at the INSTALL.LOG file. I did
- that, but after finding the file, I entered
-
- [C:\OS2\INSTALL]more <INSTALL.log. Before the first screen was
- fully written, the system crashed again, and I shut it off to go home.
-
- Since I didn't get to look at the INSTALL.LOG, I was wondering if my
- decision to look at the fdisk screen, but not do anything caused the
- screwup (Some file didn't get copied, but OS/2 thaought that it had,
- or is my disk 5 now screwed up? and if it is, how do I get a new one.
-
- I bought OS/2 back in April or June (Upgrading from Windows 3.0 that I
- never used), but didn't install it until this week due to a need for a
- hard disk replacement and lack of time due to work. I had install the
- Service Pack, and until this had had no problems. This morning, I
- installed the Display.DLL from the VGA800-1.zip file, since I have an
- ATI VgaWonder.
-
- Any help would be appricated, so I can learn from this fiasco. I
- figure I'll reboot from floppy on Monday and attempt to do a 'copy
- install.log prn' before I attempt to complete the reinstall.
-
- Did I do anything wrong, or was re-installation necessary?
-
- BTW, based on this, For the FAQ question on partitioning the hard
- drive, I would recommend that however you decide to install OS/2, you
- should make sure that you install OS/2 in it's own partition, and
- don't put ANYTHING else on that partition. That way should you have
- to reinstall, you don't end up having to reinstall all of your
- applications also!
