- : I have been using GTAR to backup my system from DOS by
- : copying the entire drive contents. Well I finally had
- : an opportunity to use my tapes to restore my system
- : due to some unrelated problems. The problem is that
- : OS/2 does not seem to have restored properly.. From
- : what I can see all my hidden files returned and my os/2
- : directory is intact, but my desktop refuses to come up.
- : When I boot OS/2 now, it all boots ok but when the desktop
- : begins to paint itself I get the background color and the
- : clock and thats it, no icons, no menus, no nothing?? Can
- : I recover from this without reinstalling OS/2..

- If you had watched your backup listing carefully, you would probably
- have seen a message about "can't backup \OS2\OS2SYS.INI -- file in use"
- and another for "\OS2\OS2.INI". (I think those are the names, just do
- a "DIR *.INI" in \OS2.) The WPS keeps these files open at all times,
- with exclusive access. This means backup utilities cannot get at them.
-
- There are several public domain utilities to get at these files
- available by anonymous ftp from hobbes (128.123.35.151). These
- programs will help you avoid future occurances of this problem by
- facilitating backups of the .INI files. While you're at it, be sure
- to grab the latest UNZIP from the archivers directory, as the one
- used on most of the files on hobbes is very new, and not compatible
- with older copies. Also be sure to get a copy of the FAQ.
-
- Unfortunately, now that they're gone, they're gone. You can use
- Alt-Shift-F1 at bootup (I think) to give you a brand new set of files.
- This will bring your system up ass if it were a brand new install.
