- I spoke with WP a few days ago as well. They also informed me of the
- delay in WP for OS/2 2.0 but went further to explain that one of the
- OB biggies built into WordPerfect 5.2 (a $50 upgrade) for Windows is
- actually for support for use under OS/2 until the OS/2 version of
- WP for Win comes out. Not heavily advertised, as they don't want to
- step on sales of their own products currently for OS/2 1.x, most people
- would not know this. Claims to be OS/2 smart and will multithread and
- show significant speed advantages over WP for Windows 5.1.
-
- I asked a WP representative about some of the issues mentioned. He
- said that yes, WP 5.2 does run much better under OS/2 2.0 compared to
- the 5.1 version. He also said that WP will release a 5.2 version for
- OS/2. The other side of that coin is of course that it means that WP
- 6.0 i delayed. WP 6.0 will not be available BEFORE fall '93.
-
- There has been some rumours about a 6.0 version for DOS early '93. He
- would not confirm that, and said that this must be rumours and that he
- did not know about such plans.
-
- Unfortunatly, the WP 5.2 will be a 16-bit, not a 32-bit program.
- (Don't ask me why.) It will be out "first half of '93". He would not
- be more specific, but said that he was hoping that it would be early
- '93.
-
- This tells me first of all that WP 6.0 is delayed. But it also tells
- me that WP see the OS/2 market as an important market, and that there
- is a demand for OS/2 applications. (They would not have decided to
- make 5.2 for OS/2 if it was not for the market pressure). But it is
- also likely that WP will loose market shares to Lotus, given that
- Lotus have their 32-bit Ami Pro out 1Q '93.
