- I just installed OS/2 2.0 at my work machine; and have not managed to
- resolve an incompatibility with Alpha Four v.2 database -- which is
- one of the main applications we need at work. Alpha Four is in the
- OS/2 migration database (it migrated), so one would think that IBM
- would have prepared the DOS settings for compatibility -- but no such
- luck. An IBM tech representative was of very little help -- though
- there is an off chance that someone a little more knowledgeable will
- call back in a couple days.
- The machine I have is a clone 386sx-33 w/6Mg (4Mg of those on
- a Bocaram AT+), with Trident 1Mg SVGA, but running only in stock VGA
- video mode. The IDE disk is partitioned with both HPFS and FAT areas,
- w/ Alpha Four on a FAT section (so that I can at least boot to DOS
- when I need to use it). I don't think this as much to do with the
- problem, however.
- The problem is with display problems while running Alpha Four.
- The opening screen of the database appears normally, and the program
- seems to fully load. But after choosing a choice or two from the
- opening menu, the screen goes blank (but in the color scheme of Alpha
- Four)... The whole screen is the normal grey-blue of the Alpha Four
- background, except for the menu-choice highlight bar which still
- appears on screen, and moves around with the arrow keys, as normal.
- Occassionally, if I choose some additional menu choices (from memory
- of either the activation key or screen position of the choice -- since
- the actual choices are no longer visible), the screen will go into an
- inappropriate video mode, with flashing hi-bit characters flashing
- randomly over the screen. Sometimes, on hitting the "quit" key, OS/2
- reports one of several system errors (sorry, I don't have them in
- front of me right now).
- The problem seems to be pretty much identical whether I start
- Alpha Four from the Icon which "Migrate" created, or from the default
- "Dos Full-Screen" Icon. I've tried fiddling with obvious Dos
- Settings, but all I've managed to do is get system errors from OS/2 as
- soon as I start Alpha Four with the modified settings.
- Please email any responses to me. I often check this group,
- but I might miss the response if it's only posted.
