  33. The problem is the IRQ assignment of DOS. Windows does not allow
  34. useage of two COM ports at the same IRQ, especially if the associated
  35. software is interrupt-driven (mouse, telecommunication)

  38.  COM2 + COM4 : IRQ 3
  39.  
  40. Re-assignment of your Modem to COM2 and the external serial
  41. to COM3 should help.
