- First a reply to the original post. Comp.text.tex is the newsgroup to
- check out for TeX/LaTeX stuff. Furthermore, you can mix double column
- and single column using minipages.
-
- As far as comparing TeX/LaTeX to desktop publishing or wordprocessing
- systems on PC's, I belive it is closer to word processors than DTP.
- The strength of TeX is processing text not graphics. If you need to
- typeset large documents, reports, thesis, books etc TeX/LateX is the
- way too go. If you need to typeset math I don't know of any free or
- reasonably priced system to do it (I mean do it well). Most WP or DTP
- sytems on the market suffer from lack of symbols of fonts. Furthermore
- they are not aware of the contex-sensitive spacing required to typeset
- these correctly. Just check out AMS-LaTeX (AMS for American
- Mathematical Society). The typestting of very complicated equations is
- painless and it comes out right almost all the time. On the other hand
- I wouldn't try to use TeX prepare a flyer.
-
- Tex is a typesetting system which requires you to use an editor to be
- able to prepare your document. A word processor is usually a
- combined editor/typesetter which is definetely not the best editor you
- can get end definately not the best typesetter. I have been quite
- happy with my emacs/TeX combination. I would like to have WYSIWYG but
- with TeX the output is quite predictable (it comes out right) so this
- doesn't cause headaches.
