-
- Firstly my "credentials" for offering advice: I've been running
- OS/2 2.0 since the second-to-last beta version. At home I have
- a 20MHz 386SX with 8MB RAM, 200MB drive. I use a good mix
- of DOS, Windows and OS/2 apps. At work I'm developing software
- on PCs running DOS 5.0+Windows 3.1.
-
-
- With the addition of 4MB RAM, your machine will be well suited
- to running OS/2. Sure, it'll run with 4MB total, but 8MB is
- necessary for it to run well.
-
- Compatability with DOS programs is very good indeed. Windows
- 3.1 capability is expected early '93.
-
- At present OS/2 is pretty stable, but the recent bug-fix
- (known as the "CSD") has introduced a few new problems
- along with the fixes! My system was crashing daily for a few
- weeks, but I moved things around on the disk last week. It
- hasn't crashed since. Why? Don't know. It would be fair
- to say I regard OS/2 as a little bit flakey. But so is
- Windows! It crashes, and DOS apps lock-up. The reboot under DOS
- is a lot quicker so they are not quite as annoying. Under OS/2
- you have a definite advantage in that you can often kill
- an app that has itself crashed, without killing OS/2.
-
- Okay. Constructive advice time: -
-
- 1. If you will be running Windows apps much, or need TrueType
- fonts and Multimedia support, install DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1.
- Windows will really fly on your system in the 4MB you have.
- When OS/2 supports Win3.1, upgrade to that.
-
- 2. If DOS apps will be your mainstay, install OS/2 as your main
- operating system. Put it in its own partition (around 40MB
- should be plenty - provided you put the swapfile on a different
- partition). If you want to be able to boot either DOS or
- OS/2, that must be a FAT partition. The OS/2 manuals (brief
- though they are) explain the setup well. You can play with
- OS/2 apps, and hopefully can move more and more in that direction.
- I have three HPFS partitions, and a FAT partition. To boot DOS
- I simply boot off a floppy. The FAT partition is the only one
- visible to me then, and appears as the C: drive.
-
- Good luck!
