-
- Don't know about the beta. The preleminary SDK doesn't. If you have
- access to a machine with both a CD drive and a floppy, it is
- quite simple to create a set of floppies which are sufficient
- to install Windows NT from them.
-
- >Can you run concurrent DOS sessions like OS/2? Are they robust?
-
- No, you can't. There is a multiple boot feature, however, and
- a DOS emulation subsystem. Currently, it is not very robust. But
- it is more than sufficient to run the various DOS based programmers
- tools like editors (I'm using SEE and SPRINT on NT, for example).
-
- >How often does it crash?
-
- Well, I used it for over a month for program development and
- testing, before I got the first crash.
-
- >How much space does it take up?
-
- About 35 MBytes for the system including the usual set of applets,
- plus about 20 MBytes for a swapfile. The SDK comes extra. :-)
-
- >What notable things aren't implemented?
-
- It seems to be mostly complete, in the October prerelease.
-
- >I have a 486 with 8 meg. Is that big enough?
-
- Barely. I installed it on a 8 MByte 486/25, and tried a few things.
- It runs slowly, but it runs. I would recommend that you upgrade
- your machine to 16M before attempting to do any serious work,
- or that you wait for the final release.
-
- >What do you see different about it versus 3.1?
-
- It's fully preemptive. You can launch a second program via the
- program manager before the first one even displays its main
- window, for example.
-
- It has a file systems which has long filenames and knows about
- file ownership.
-
- >Is multitasking smoother and more power wise?
-
- Yes.
