  26. Seriously, I agree with your points: minix is absolutely better than
  27. nothing, so on older (or non-clone) hardware it's perfectly fine, as
  28. well as for learning about unix.  But the original question (in case
  29. anybody still remembers it instead of the linux-minix flame-war) was
  30. whether minix was much better than linux, with the obvious implication
  31. that he had the hardware to run either.  And I've got enough of an ego
  32. not to let that kind of question go unanswered (besides, the minix group
  33. has been mostly empty lately, so it can't hurt to get some discussion
  34. going anyway).

  36. Also, Bruce Evans (general good guy and the author of the 386-minix
  37. patches as well as lots of other minix code) pointed out per email that
  38. some of the linux features can be gotten as patches (math support etc),
  39. and that some minix device drivers are better (with patches - mainly
  40. written by him I suspect) than the linux ones (the reverse is also true,
  41. of course).  So it's not a question of linux being perfect, but assuming
  42. you have the hardware linux is generally much nicer to use and hack on
  43. than minix is.  That doesn't detract from the usability of minix on
  44. other hardware (or in special circumstances like university studies
  45. etc).
