- At my former employer, I set up a two-person operation to handle the
- entire hardware portability effort across about a dozen platforms.
- This *cannot* be done without gcc, especially on a budget limited as
- ours was. Every other company's portability department I knew of looked
- more like a big bureaucracy than a team of two tucked away in the midst
- of a much bigger engineering group.
-
- As for support, gcc comes out on new platforms faster than any of the
- commercial products. Instead of one or two people at the other end of the
- phone line, I have an entire Internet of people on call 24 hours daily
- to resolve problems with gcc.
-
- An example: last year, I was due to ship a product on SCO Xenix during
- the coming week, but none of the software installation procedures had
- been written yet, and I had a braindead non-ANSI compiler. It was
- proving time-consuming to bring up my own copy of gcc on this little toy
- computer. So I posted to one of the comp.unix newsgroups looking for
- help.
-
- Someone in Australia emailed me everything I needed to bring up not
- only the compiler (prebuilt), but perl and an entire set of scripts
- to produce turnkey installation diskettes in the native vendor format
- (in that case, 'custom'). By Tuesday, I handed my boss diskettes
- ready for customer delivery.
-
- Try getting *that* kind of service from a vendor!

- P.S. Repeated demonstrations like this will in fact convert even the
- stuffiest bosses into signature authorities for improved Internet access!
- My former employer now has a 10-Mbit connection...
