  10. Most profuse apologies.  I looked through the FAQ, and activity on
  11. comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware, and couldn't find a meaningful treatise on
  12. just what the specific differences between the various UARTs available
  13. is.  I'm aware of the venerable 8250, 16450, 16550 and 16550a, but
  14. I wish two things.  Are there any other cardinal types of UARTs, and
  15. what technically distinguishes these?

  17. My underlying desire is to be able to support a very fast modem.  That,
  18. and to know everything just for the fun of it.
