- I can give more details but here is it in a nutshell. I tried recompiling
- the kernel source provided with the SLS distribution .98. I wanted to
- eliminate the requester for SVGA Mode. I wanted number 4 all the time.
- I 'make clean'd then 'make disk'd. The disk spun, I 'reboot'ed and I got a
- string of characters such as this:
-
- It goes through the "Loading ............................................"
- then this...
-
- @X0212
- AX020F
- BX4A00
- CX1B01
- DX0000.
- <over and over, grinding the disk each time over and over until I reboot>
- ----
- Then, I go back to DOS. I have a Dual Monitor Setup (which I've had for
- awhile now).
-
- I have been using a program called 'setbus' to change the bus from 8 to
- 16 bit while doing regular stuff.
-
- Well this time I boot up and I do couple commands and all I get is
- GARBAGE, symbols scattered about, different colors. All the lines EXCEPT
- the bottom one. If I 'CLS' in DOS and do a 'dir' it is fine until the
- cursor hits the bottom line. Then all hell breaks loose.
-
- Well, I eliminated setbus from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and all seemed fine. I
- tried the Video/Diagnotic program to check into things and IT comes back
- again just for that one screen.
-
- I noticed if I use any program that alters the screen from 25 lines to
- 50 lines (VGA), and then return to 25 Lines, the problem is repaired.
- unless I use the Diagnostic program or setbus again.
-
- This is making me a little ill.
-
- I did Not change a single line in the kernel code, I don't know why it
- did not work in the first place, I was willing to live with it, but now
- I feel I have scarred something.
