- I have been interested for some time now in installing a unix type
- OS on my 386 pc, (a Tandon 386 Option). I am primarily interested
- in the educational value of experimenting with a project such as this,
- and hope that perhaps I can even provide something useful someday.
- (Right now I am a graduate student with a heavy emphasis on the
- theoretical side, and not much on the applications side. I am
- attempting to rectify that situation.) Since some other people in
- my department have already been involved in the 386BSD project, I
- naturally turned that direction first. However, having attempted to
- boot the 386BSD system repeatedly with no success, I decided to try
- Linux. The Linux system booted properly right off, and I am now making
- arrangements to install the system probably over Xmas break.
-
- I have downloaded the FAQ and quite a bit of other documentation which
- I am in the process of reading, but some questions are remaining
- unanswered. These questions relate primarily to the difference twixt
- the 386BSD and Linux, and I was hoping that someone could fill in
- some of the blanks for me.
-
- Question: What is the major differences between the two systems? Keep
- in mind that I never got very far with the BSD, so I don't really know
- what it has to offer.
-
- Question: I have looked through much of the Dr. Dobb's Journal at
- articles about the BSD, and felt rather....well.."warmed" by the fact
- that so much information was freely available. Is there an analogous
- periodical output, (besides the nn news), relating to Linux?
-
- Question: I have been told that the Linux system does not offer all the
- networking capabilities that 386BSD does. Is this true, and if so what
- work is being done on it? I would be VERY interested in working on
- anything in this area, if this were indeed the case.
-
- Finally,
- Question: Why did the Linux boot disk work properly, and the 386BSD did
- not? (Perhaps this would better be suited to the comp.unix.bsd group.)
-
- Anyway, I am fairly confident that I am going to be installing this
- system sometime around the new year, unless someone gives me a REAL
- good reason otherwise. (My wife doesn't count, she's got her own
- computer.) Thanks in advance for any help anyoned has to give.
