  13. OK,
  14.    I have been trying for about a week to get X to run on my ET-4000 based
  15. graphics card.  I am getting the error message :

  17. Fatal server error:
  18. could not open default font 'fixed'
  19.  
  20. I know X pretty well on RS/6000s, so I tried the following things, none 
  21. of which seems to work :
  22.  
  23. 1)  Added 'FontPath "/usr/X386/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"' to my Xconfig file
  24. 2)  Remade the 'fonts.dir' file with 'mkfontdir /usr/X386/lib/X11/fonts/misc'
  25. 3)  Checked the fonts.alias file to make sure it had a 'fixed' entry in it
  26. 4)  Ran X by itself with 'X -df(?) Rom11' or some other font I knew existed,
  27.     but no dice
  28.  
  29. I would appreciate any suggestions.  No RTFM comments, because I have already
  30. looked through the FAQ and anything else I can find, but I couldn't find an
  31. answer anywhere.  It's seems that this really should be in the FAQ.

  33.    A couple of other questions:

  35. 1)  After I get the default font problem licked, I am still having trouble
  36.     getting garbage on the screen.  When I run startx, the screen goes blank,
  37.     and the random light and dark lines appear.  Is this normal if the server
  38.     won't start?
  39.  
  40. 2)  I heard that someone was working on a compressed filesystem.  When they
  41.     say compressed, are we discussing something like Stacker?
