- Hey, you're making good time compared to my last compile of 0.99!
- I was running the 0.98.6 kernel, gcc 2.2.2d7, on a 386SX/16 w/ 2Mb RAM
- and a 27 Mb Linux-*Extended* partition and a 5 Mb swap partition.
- That compile took a total of SIXTEEN HOURS. (Still, it might have
- been quicker if I hadn't been compiling stuff [LILO B.7, extfs-progs,
- and the latest version of poeigl] on other virtual consoles while
- downloading stuff through kermit5A on another...)

- You should see the guys' jaws drop at work when I tell them what my
- poor little box has been doing all night. :-)
-
- "Uh, Rick... Did you know your hard-drive light is on?"
-
- "Huh? Oh, yeah... it's compiling a few things in the background."
-
- [Then the fella's mouth opens successively wider each time I show
- him the activity on yet another virtual console...]
-
- My box at home is a little nicer (386DX/25 w/ 4 Mb RAM, etc. on an ext-fs).
- It only took 45 minutes to compile the Linux 0.99 kernel, even while reading
- news and stuff on the university machine through kermit5a.
