- Maybe the mouse isn't the problem but here's the situation:
-
- SLS 0.98p5 full release installed except for TeX.
- I then downloaded the X8514 file and followed all of the instructions.
- The result is an initially halftone gray screen with the X cursor in the
- middle, and approximately 8-10 seconds later the screen goes to a light
- blue, the clock appears in the upper left, and the virtual desktop shows up
- sort of in the middle. From here I am unable to do anything. I have to
- ctrl-alt-bksp to get out.
-
- A couple things that might factor in. I didn't quite follow the
- instructions for X8514. I used the Xconfig.ati file instead of the Xconfig
- file that was in the release. I switched this after the Xconfig just blanked
- my screen and hung my computer. Then by starting with the Xconfig.ati file,
- I got the same description as in the above paragraph, except that only the
- title bar of the clock appeared with the title clock instead of bash, and
- the virtual desktop was very small. I then remembered seeing something about
- the ATI busmouse not using a sample rate (or some such thing). So I
- commented out the sample rate in the Xconfig(.ati). The result is described
- above. Another factor is that upon bootup now, both an ATI busmouse, and
- Microsoft mouse are detected and installed. I have no idea why this changed.
- I take that back. It must have to do with my changing the /dev/mouse to
- "c 10 2". So now I don't know what to do. Do I still have to change
- something in the kernel and/or recompile it? and if so I haven't a clue how
- to do so. Is this actually simpler than it sounds? (This is coming from a DOS
- user).
-
- Honestly, I was suprised I got this far considering all the bugs I see
- mentioned in the docs and the news. But if someone can guide me the rest of
- the way, I'd be really grateful.
-
- Thanks in advance.
