- It seems that a lot of people are having trouble getting the right modes
- for their video cards in their Xconfigs. (I had these problems, too.) Not a day
- without "Please tell me what to put in the Xconfig for [Trident8900/ET4000/ATI/blah]
- card with blah blah..." I was frustrated in the beginning, too, when I couldn't
- get X to work, then only with 640x480.
-
- Then I saw the light at the end of the tunnel!
-
- There is a spreadsheet called sc that comes with the SLS distribution.
- (I think it's /usr/bin/sc, but correct me if I'm wrong.) Anyway, in the same
- directory as your Xconfig, there are two files called modegen1.sc and modegen2.sc.
- These are pre-done spreadsheets to generate all those timing delays for the mode
- entries. You run it by doing "sc modegen[12].sc". Plug in the appropriate values
- for your clock speed, horizontal frequency, and refresh (Frames/sec.). These
- should be in the docs for your video card and monitor. Make sure not to exceed
- maximum or minimum values.
-
- There is also a readme in that same dir (is it /usr/X386/lib/X11 ?). You
- should be able to extract some more info from this. Maybe this advice should be
- included in the FAQ on X, as few people seem to be aware of this excellent way
- to get some really funky video modes (1040x700 is as far as I can push my hardware,
- although the flicker tends to make my brain drain out of my eyes after about half
- an hour...
-
- With a little playing, you too can become an expert at calculating
- video modes for your particular hardware (because I doubt my Xconfig would
- be of much use to you even if I posted it here...).
-
- Well, hope that helped a bit.

- P.S. OOOPS! I just noticed that the window xrn is running in is about
- 200 columns wide, so this post is going to look *really* nasty! Sorry! :-)
