- Well, I decided to give Linux a shot, what with Christmas break and
- all this free time on my hands!:)
- Anyway, I've had a couple of problems. I read the FAQ,
- install.notes and the README that came with the SLS package but I still
- have some questions I'm hoping some kind soul can help me with.
- As implied I'm using the SLS distribution and the result of a
- 'uname -a' on what I've gotten installed is:
-
- Linux "name" 0.98.pl5-41 12/01/92 i386
-
- My hardware configuration is:
-
- Clone 486/33 ISA (Orchid Superboard 486/33)
- 16MB RAM (64k RAM cache)
- Adaptec 1542B SCSI controller
- Maxtor LXT-200S 210MB SCSI hard drive
- Video: Farenheit 1280/D (LocalBus S3 based card)
-
- The first problem I encountered was partitioning my hard drive. I
- wiped out what was on it before and I'm having trouble relating the
- Heads/Cylinders/Sectors to what I have. The docs for my hard drive say it's
- an "intelligent" device so what you use for the parameters doesn't matter
- much. The problem is Linux does care what they are so I thought I'd use
- some semi-arbitrary numbers:
-
- Cylinders: 1024
- Heads: 8
- Sectors: 50
-
- It accepted these but when I tried to do the mkfs step it told me I
- had to specify less than 65536 blocks! Why? I had another error, which at
- the moment escapes me, but I believe it was after the fdisk?
- My second question is, is there any SVGA support for my video card,
- F1280 (S3 based)? I can't even get mono X support to work on my card. A
- 'startx', with X being configured for mono, appears to put my card in
- graphics mode but then just locks up my machine, and this IS for mono
- support since the color configuration gives me definate error messages and
- exits X without locking up.
- Lastly, if I resolve the above problems I'd really like to have
- Linux boot up directly from my hard drive. Can this be accomplished with
- the "shoe" program mentioned in install.notes?
-
- Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
