  13. I'm really not at all happy with linux so far.  Its nuked my harddrive and
  14. caused me hours of untold grief.  I've asked all the IRC #linux gurus I
  15. couldhunt down for help and they don't seem to have a clue... so here
  16. goes:
  17.   I have a Western Digital 7000FASST SCSI controller, and a Maxtor 338meg
  18. hard drive.  Its physical characteristics are:

  20.   Cylinders            = 1632    !!!!  They say this is a problem !!!!
  21.   Tracks/sector        = 54
  22.   Heads                = 8
  23.   Tracks/Zone          = 8
  24.   Alt. Sectors/zone    = 5
  25.   Alt. Tracks/zone     = 0
  26.   Bytes/Pysical sector = 512
  27.   Interleave           = 1
  28.   Track Skew           = 0
  29.   Cylinder Skew        = 16
  30.  
  31. I boot up, it recognizes my controller, it says

  33. "bad paritiion table for dev 0800
  34.  partition table ok."

  36. When I boot.

  38. I then run "fdisk /dev/sda" and I enter the extended options menu and
  39. enter the tracks, cylinders and heads and it ends up nuking my hard drive
  40. without fail.
