  20. Well, that's all fine and dandy... but that still doesn't address the problem
  21. FSUUCP has regarding long >>NEWSGROUP<< filenames.  When I was using the
  22. supplementary program that would go through an active file and create all the
  23. news subdirectories (can't recall the name... fixactive? makeactive? guh..),
  24. it would fail to make them because of the long newsgroup filenames.  UUPC's
  25. approach is to use an '8+3' naming convention, and ignoring the trailing name
  26. of the newsgroup.  Arguably, this could cause problems for anything that's not
  27. unique after the first 11 characters, but as Drew Derbyshire at Kendra
  28. pointed out: it's a pretty rare case.
