- Hello,
- I append an extract from an EARN/Bitnet memo that gives some information
- and pointers for mailers and user agents. The whole document is available on
- the Netserv file servers as MAILSOFT PRODUCTS.
- Hope this helps, /Nadine

- 4. UCLA/Mail
- ------------
-
- Operating system: IBM MVS
-
- Product type: MTA with some primitive UA capabilities
-
- Description:
-
- UCLA/Mail (Copyright, Regents of the University of California) is a
- mail system for IBM's MVS operating system. It consists of a local post
- office, a TSO mail interface command, JES2 modifications, and
- UCLA/IPC-370 (Interprocess communications - cross memory).
-
- The local post office owns the VSAM file used to contain local mail. It
- uses UCLA/IPC-370 to communicate with the mail interface routines for
- TSO and WYLBUR. The local post office also maintains a SNA/NJE
- connection to JES2.
-
- The SNA/NJE connection to JES2 allows the post office to simulate many
- of the attributes of a VM node. Mail sent out on the network looks to
- VM nodes as if it were sent from a VM node.
-
- The TSO interface routines support sending and receiving mail services.
- They also check for unseen mail at logon, bypassing the user portion of
- the BRODCAST dataset search.
-
- The current TSO mail command operates in line at a time mode and
- provides basic MAIL functions. These include bi-directional mail
- services from the terminal or files. This basic interface also serves
- as a tool kit to build other interfaces with CLISTs and/or ISPF (see
- below).
-
- The JES2 modifications, mostly in IBM exits, control the flow of and
- mail/files in the NJE enviroment. Routing of mail files to the post
- office via SNA/NJE is done by JES2.
-
- Requirements:
-
- ASMH (V2 prefered, V1 and SLAC modification
- work, too, ASMF doesn't)
-
- MVS/SP 1.3.0 (3.3.1)
-
- JES2/SP 1.3.0 (1.3.0 ok if source adjusted as $NHD
- macro was changed by IBM) (2.2.15
- current)
-
- ACF/VTAM (tested 3.1; other versions should
- work) (ACF/VTAM V2 current)
-
- type 1 SVC (for IPC-370 -- dynamically installed,
- no gen required.)
-
- TSO (ran under several versions of TSO and
- TSO/E. Current is TSO/E Rel. 2)
-
- Availability:
-
- UCLA/Mail is a copyrighted product of the Regents of the University of
- California and is available to degree-granting institutions for $250.
- The price for non-degree-granting institutions is $2000.
-
- There is no formal maintenance or support. New versions of UCLA/Mail
- may, however, be made available from time to time.

- 5. ISPF/Mail
- ------------
-
- Operating system: IBM MVS
-
- Product type: UA
-
- Description:
-
- ISPF/Mail is a user interface to UCLA/Mail for users who are familiar
- with the standard IBM ISPF/PDF environment.
-
- ISPF/Mail is designed to be integrated into the PDF product. You will
- find a menu item to invoke ISPF/Mail in your ISPF/PDF primary option
- menu including an option to read a detailed tutorial for further
- information.
-
- Besides the ability of invoking ISPF/Mail via a menu chain, there is
- also a list of ISPF commands that you can enter on any menu inside
- ISPF/PDF:
-
- MAIL Invoke the MAIL primary menu
- MAILBox or MB Look into your mailbox index
- SENDMail Compose a new message
- NAMES Manipulate your nickname data set
- MRESUME Resume a suspended SENDMail activity
- NOTEBOOK Manipulate your notebooks
- MAILOPTS Tailor your ISPF/Mail dialog behavior
-
- This ISPF dialog was developed at Bar-Ilan University, and is used as
- the user interface for UCLA/Mail (on top of the UCLA product). It is
- based mainly on CLISTs and ISPF panels and tables. The author hopes
- to find the time, at some point, to convert it to REXX and add some
- functionality (like true notebook processing). This interface has
- become the ad-hoc standard interface for UCLA/Mail installations.
-
- Requirements:
-
- UCLA/Mail (V1M3 or higher)
- TSO/E Rel. 2
- ISPF V2
-
- Availability:
-
- This ISPF dialog is distributed on an as-is basis, without any
- warranty whatsoever to its correctness or to the results of its
- operation.
-
- The dialog is distributed as one dataset (ISPFLIB) for ease of
- installation, maintenance and mobility.

- cooperative effort between Softlab Munich and GMD Bonn sponsored by
- the Verein zur Foerderung eines deutschen Forschungsnetzes (DFN).
-
- UCLA/Mail400 is based on V1M4 of UCLA/Mail, and on Doron Shikmoni's
- ISPF user agent.

- 7. BEN
- ------
-
- Operating system: IBM MVS
-
- Product type: UA
-
- Description:
-
- This ISPF Dialog and support routines was developed at UCLA to provide a
- convenient electronic mail interface to users who might not use a
- computer for any other reason. The emphasis is on ease of learning and
- use rather than on "power".
-
- BEN provides support for:
-
- Normal mail operations: Send, Receive, Reply, Forward, Print,
- Save
-
- Folders: Mail may be saved in folders, folders
- may be searched on contents. Mail
- contained in folders may be forwarded
- and replied to.
-
- Address Book: A fullscreen interface is provided to
- allow the user to update/maintain their
- NAMES.TEXT dataset of
- nicknames/distribution lists.
-
- Online Directory: Users may interactively add/change
- their entry in the online directory,
- which may then be used by other users
- to find their electronic address.
-
- Included with the distribution is a Macintosh diskette containing a
- Microsoft WORD version of our users manual.
-
- BEN is less flexible than the ISPF dialog developed by Doron Shikmoni
- described below, but it is easier to learn for the non-PDF literate,
- and contains some features not available in that dialog.
-
- Requirements:
-
- TSO/E Rel. 4
-
- ISPF V2.3
-
- BEN is built "on top of" UCLA/Mail, and the installation instructions
- assume that UCLA/Mail has already been installed on the system.
-
- Availability:
-
- BEN is a copyrighted product of the Regents of the University of
- California and is available for a fee.
-
- If you obtain BEN from UCLA, you will automatically receive
- UCLA/Mail, and UCLA/Mail is included in the price quoted for BEN
-
- For non-degree-granting institutions, the price for BEN plus
- UCLA/Mail is $3000.
