- I should have known better to expect a certain netter to keep track of a
- thread when he responds to it anywhere beyond the original article, espe-
- cially after what he pulled in news.software.readers last week, but I naively
- gave the guy a second chance. Cheat me once, shame on you; cheat me twice,
- shame on me.
-
- When I asked in <Bz28FM.Mq6@ddsw1.mcs.com>:
-
- | >HOW can I keep Elm from removing $tmpdir/snd.$$ upon hangups? I think Elm
- | >should remove that file only when the user exits the editor (and the header
- | >editing screen) and issues a s)end or f)orget command.
-
- ... syd@dsi.com (Syd Weinstein) replied in <1g8u2kINNsvs@dsinc.dsi.com>:
-
- | The code that does this is in src/util.c, in the leave function.
- | You need to delete or comment out the lines that 'delete' the edit buffer.
-
- I replied from my HoloNet account (in an article that hasn't reached ddsw1
- yet) that an administrator-level suggestion was impractical and would require
- all other Elm users on ddsw1 to delete their $tmpdir/snd.$$ files by hand.
-
- That certain netter responded that no, Syd had said that those files would
- stick around only if Elm is terminated by a sighup during editing. Dupe that
- I am, I replied politely that gosh, I must have misunderstood Syd, and if
- that's true, my second objection would vanish, though there still would be
- the problem of importuning ddsw1's owner (and I'd rather he spend what time
- he can spare for my problems on curing the hangups) to edit and rebuild Elm.
-
- But I checked back, and surely enough, Syd had added this:
-
- | Note: this code is called in a lot of places, this will do all of them
- | not just the sighup.
-
- So my second objection stands: commenting out the code for deleting
- $tmpdir/snd.$$ would require all users to rm those files by hand -- not just
- me when I luck into finishing a session -- and it's just not reasonable to
- force it on everyone.
-
- My third objection is that HoloNet doesn't allow canceling articles.
