- $ I was booting version 9.1(1) Communication server software on an
- $ ASM with no NV-RAM.. the boot process is weird:
- $
- $ 1. The ASM booted the cisco11-csc3 image right away on power-cycle
-
- You have your configuration register at the CPU board set to netboot cisco11-csc3
- file which has shown in your show hardware command.
-
- Configuration register is 0x109
-
- What you need to do is pull out the jumper on bit 3 and leave the
- other on bit 0( more details setting info is in the Hardware manual -
- CPU bootstrap program).
-
- $ 2. It then reloaded using the newly booted image
-
- Well, it is set to do netboot so it does what it supposes
- to do.
-
- $ 3. It then went into a config dialogue where I had to enter the
- $ the ethernet address and host name, etc. and confirm the info.
-
- That is the problem. I suppose we are the only few cisco customers
- that still don't the the NV-RAM in the box :-). Start somewhere
- in 8.3, cisco boot PROM will automatically get into the
- dialogue menu if the box does not has NV-RAM. Though the box still
- send out Bootp request, it basically ignore the bootp return and drop
- you into the configuration menu. You just have to hope the box would
- not crash in the middle of the night or weekend :-) as you have to
- enter the hostname, IP address, etc.
-
-
- $ 4. It then loaded the network-confg and mozart-confg over the net
- $ without further prompting.
- $
- $ Why didn't it ask for the network-confg in step-3 ??
- $
-
- The 9.1(1) PROM do that if you don't have the NV-RAM. I have the
- same problem and with the wonderful help from Mary Gardzal at cisco,
- I received a set of new PROM Version 9.1(1.5) which will put
- your box back to "normal" behaviour. It will do the normal
- bootp request and load the configuration files from your
- TFTP server without getting into the menu. Thanks again, Mary!!!
