- I've got Cabetron Fiber-Optic Transceivers hanging off most the ports of my three
- AGS+ units. Of the remainders, they are either 10BaseT itty-bitty-TPTs from ctron or
- AUI Cables leading to corresponding ports in Cabletron hubs.
-
- I have decided that I really need to find a better way than to hang the FOTs
- off the router. True, it works for a while but after about a year or so our
- AUI ports are starting to show the physical strain. The LEDs are just obscured
- enough to make it a real pain to get at them.
-
- If I had the time & money (yeah... hundreds of thousands for infrastructure, but
- not a penny for tribute) to do it here's what I'd do:
-
- I'd velcro all the transceivers to the side of the rack in rows, with all the fiber and AUI
- cables tied together in bundles that feed into one or two pieces of innerduct that are
- fastened to the back of the rack and lead down to the interfaces or over the the patch
- panel. I'd label each transceiver with my zippy little Brother label-maker with
- building name, and subnet address for each protocol suite (IP: 129.120.2.0, IPX: E1000,etc)
- and leave enough slack at the transceivers so I can pull a fiber pair or AUI
- cable off it need be. I'd also screw a 35mm film canister to the side of the rack
- with 3 pair of each type of fiber connector protectors we use to keep them available
- and dust-free. Too bad AUI needs more than 8 leads. It'd sure be great to use RJ-45s
- for connectors on short AUI cables at the hubs. Cabletron makes some nifty AUI cables
- with thin flexible cables, but they're a bit too short for use at the hub -- we
- tend to use them on workstations.
