  18. I'll take anyone's word *if* they're a big enough company *and* they
  19. give it in writing.  Even if the hardware I buy now doesn't eventually
  20. support the real standard, I'd expect such a company to upgrade the
  21. modem by straight swap if necessary.

  23. I'm more worried about whether they'll *charge* (or charge significantly)
  24. for an upgrade in 2 years time when the standard is settled.  No point in
  25. saying 'by our $1000 modem now and we'll make sure you're upgraded' if you
  26. have to pay more big bucks for that upgrade.  Anyone (like Motorola) saying
  27. now that they'll upgrade ought to also say under what conditions.
