- : This is not entirely true. For two nodes, 2 10BaseT tranceivers connected
- : with UTP and RJ45's, WILL work. Receive and transmit need to be flopped
- : in the cable. We are using this in several places here. For networking 2

- After I stopped to think about it I saw my mistake. The reason I though
- a point-to-point 10baseT connection would have trouble was because of the
- collision dection used by 10baseT. Let me explain. In 10base2 or 10base5
- I believe collisions are detected by seeing the increased signal level
- when multiple stations are attempting to talk at the same time. This
- is not the case with 10baseT. In most twisted pair environments an
- intelligent hub of some kind (such as a Synoptics concentrator) is
- necessary for collision detection. It monitors all of its ports and
- sees when a signal is being transmitted on more then one of them. It
- then generates a *collision presence signal* and transmits it on all
- ports. This approach makes design of the transceiver much simpler.
-
- My first thought was that the lack of an intellegent hub between two
- 10baseT nodes would mean no collision detection and thus an unreliable
- connection. I was right in assuming there is no collision detection.
- But of course there doesn't need to be. With separate transmit and
- receive lines there can be no contention and thus no collisions.
-
- OK. Hopefully I've managed to yank my foot out of my mouth. Thats
- what happens when you let software types like me blather on about
- hardware. :-)
