  23.    This capability has been available on the AT&T 5ESS(rg) switch for several
  24. years, for speeds up to 9600 baud.  They interwork to X.25 on an ISDN D-channel.
  25. Modem pools can be either public (TELCo) or private (on customer prem.), and
  26. can exist in various combinations of Closed User Group & Incoming/Outgoing
  27. restrictions.  The private designation can allow public (unscreened) access
  28. if that is desired.  Maintenance responsibility can be either "customer"
  29. or "switch owner".

  31.    For some users that need modems on an infrequent basis, model pooling
  32. makes a lot of sense (for analog or ISDN lines).  For ISDN users that use
  33. D-channel for data to "internal" points and only occasionally need
  34. "outside" access, modem pools are much cheaper than a modem per user.
