- Hi people,
- I'm working with a team that is planning to integrate a UNIX box (this
- will either be an RS6000 or HP9000 I think) running Sybase with a Token
- Ring LAN of PCs running Novell Netware 3.x on IPX with Source Routing.
-
- We're looking at various options for developing client/server
- applications under MS Windows -- plus we want them to be portable to the
- Mac environment we have as well (which uses a gateway to a LocalTalk
- LAN). Our main network is a mix of 4 and 16 Mb Token Rings with IBM
- adaptor cards and the usual cabling.
-
- I'm interested in soliciting experiences from anyone who has ideas on
- the following:
-
- 1. Which client/server development toolkits and 4GLs have you found
- that would work in this environment, with Sybase as the back end?
-
- 2. How do you interface the Novell PCs to the UNIX box?
-
- 3. We've considered using a dual protocol stack in the PC, but we don't
- know which front end tools will work with such a stack. We suspect that
- Sybase's own client/server toolset might have to fit in here somewhere.
- Most PC TCP stacks aren't very open.
-
- 4. Has anyone used TCP/IP Workplace for DOS from Novell? What exactly
- does this do? Does it use a gateway PC that takes a simulated Telnet
- session from a client and then turns it into a real Telnet session? And
- is it possible that this approach might work with a client/server API?
- (Not likely, I guess.)
-
- 5. I've heard of Portable Netware for UNIX, but suspect this will only
- run on an Ethernet card (with IPX and IP being shared.) Could we then
- use a router to get from the Ethernet segment to the Token Ring?
-
- 6. I've heard a rumour that Novell are coming out with a version of
- Netware based on an IP stack -- or is it just encapsulated? Any ideas
- or confirmation?
-
- 7. Are there Token Ring adaptors available for the HP or IBM UNIX
- systems which will support IPX stacks? And will any of these work with
- Sybase as the back end?
-
- I guess it's all a little complex, but I'd really appreciate any help
- you could give. Thanks in advance,
-
