- Here is a copy of press release from my sales rep. here in Australia.
-
- It is ODBC which I think is something like Open Data Base Connectivity?
- ^^
- --------------
-
- This press relase went on the US wire today as a joint release with
- Microsoft.
-
- Microsoft Partners With Ingres to Extend ODBC Support
-
- REDMOND, Wash. -- December 9, 1992 -- Microsoft Corporation and Ingres,
- an ASK Group company, today announce their partnership to provide connectivity
- from Microsoft Windows-based applications to INGRES database and connectivity
- products. The two companies will work together to deliver an ODBC driver for
- the INGRES Intelligent Database, the INGRES/Star distributed database and
- INGRES/Gateways to other major databases.
-
- "Microsoft is pleased with the rapid acceptance and strong support
- being shown for ODBC," said Johnathan Lazarus, vice president, systems
- strategy. "The Ingres endoresement of ODBC is significant due to their
- leadership position in many markets worldwide."
-
- As part of the agreement, Microsoft will distribute the INGRES ODBC
- driver and will license Ingres to distribute its ODBC Driver Manager. The
- INGRES ODBC driver and Microsoft's driver manager will be bundled in the
- INGRES/Net product for the Windows environment. INGRES/Net integrates PCs,
- workstations, departmental servers and mainframes into an enterprise-wide
- data resource allowing client applications to transparently access INGRES
- and non-INGRES data anywhere in the network.
-
- "Ingres is committed to giving its customers access to a broad range of
- client software," said Gary Elliott, Managing Director for Ingres Australia.
- "Microsoft's ODBC parallels our strategy of providing transparent connectivity
- and interoperability between clients and multiple database servers."
-
- Microsoft and Ingres plan to implement support for ODBC, in the form of
- the INGRES ODBC driver, in early 1993.
-
- Microsoft ODBC is a broadly supported, open and vendor-neutral database
- connectivity application programming interface (API) that provides access to
- data on a variety of PCs, minicomputer and mainframe systems in a easy,
- consistent manner. ODBC allows developers to write one set of code that accesses
- many types of databases, making it simple for customers to access a wide
- variety of back-end data and services from within a single application.
-
- Ingres is the leading provider of innovative, cross-platform
- information management products and the pioneer of the relational database
- industry. The second largest database company worldwide, Ingres has
- consistently led the industry, delivering the first transparent distributed
- database management system, the first intelligent database, and the first
- graphical, object-oriented fourth-generation application development tool.
- Founded in 1980 and headquartered in Alameda, California, Ingres is a wholly
- owned subsidiary of The ASK Group (NASDAQ:ASKI), one of the largest software
- companies worldwide.
-
- Founded in 1975, Microsoft (NASDAQ "MSFT") is the worldwide leader in
- software for personal computers. The company offers a wide range of products
- and services for business and personal use, each designed with the mission of
- making it easier and more enjoyable for people to take advantage of the full
- power of personal computing every day.
-
- Microsoft is a registered trademark and Windows is a trademark of Microsoft
- Corporation.
- INGRES is a trademark of Ingres Corporation.
