  12. My company is using the EMPRESS RDBMS for 3 years. Technically, we are
  13. rather happy with it. Unfortunately, we are suffering from the
  14. commercial policy of the French distributor :
  15.  
  16. 1) the price of the runtime was multiplied by 3 in 2 years (!). So our
  17. price policy (our products are based on EMPRESS) can not continue
  18. any more the way it is now.

  20. 2) It seems impossible to make them understand than a $4000 (!)
  21. difference (end user prices) between a 386 and 486 version is stupid
  22. in 1992: the price difference between two systems of this kind can be
  23. of $500 and the user will understand to pay $500 more to a computer
  24. manufacturer to have a quicker system with a different processor.
  25. However, having to pay $4000 more to EMPRESS to use the same binary
  26. distribution coming from the same tape now make the gap between a 386
  27. and a 486, a $4500 jump!  Anyway, who now buy a 386 to run a RDBMS ???

  29. I can't stand this short term strategy ("let's pump money as much as
  30. we can and those who do not like the way we do it can go to hell").

  32. So I'm desperately seeking a foreign (i.e.: non-French!) EMPRESS
  33. distributor with a better understanding of the market to solve these
  34. problems or a product conceptually near from EMPRESS (especially the C
  35. interface as we do not use the 4GL at all). We don't need any technical
  36. support as we will change of version only to have some EMPRESS bugs
  37. corrected and we know well the product.

  39. I hope that Microsoft, Borland and others will soon come to this market
  40. to shake it a bit.
