- As Applications Manager and DBA at our University I can confirm that
- Interbase does not require much maintenance once set up PROPERLY. About the
- only thing I have to do for maintenance is about 2-3 times a year I perform
- a database internal backup and restore to defragment the database 'file' in
- order to reduce the size of the DB and optimize performance. Performance
- of the DB is respectable. In order to make optimal use of the DB query
- optimizer however your DB must be designed by someone who knows what they are
- doing / who is familiar with this database software. If I knew then what I know
- now, I would have designed the DB (indexes, triggers, etc) a little
- differently.
-
- BTW we use Interbase with Powerhouse 4gl on a VAX platform for University
- administrative applications. Our ultimate goal is to have ALL apps
- functioning on a global database shared by all related depts. That goal is
- about 2 years away (we are 3 years into the effort).
